Environmental Markets
This program’s goal is to foster the development of environmental markets in ways that can help solve some of the world’s most serious environmental problems. The program funds a small number of initiatives, each of which (1) addresses a globally important environmental problem that has not responded well to traditional approaches, (2) employs a market-based tool and has the potential to significantly advance the development of that tool, and (3) can benefit from LTC’s business expertise. LTC may seek to maximize support for the desired outcomes by (a) funding multiple organizations that are dedicated to those outcomes, (b) securing additional funders who will donate alongside or through us, and (c) contributing some of our own staff time as appropriate.

Conservation Finance
The goal of this program is to help save a small number of ecologically important landscapes that may be sustainable in all respects: ecologically, financially, institutionally, politically, and socially. Typically the places will be very large, relatively pristine or readily restorable, located in nations that have very good governance, accompanied by well-designed financial structures, and in the hands of well-managed institutions that will engage local support. In particular, we seek to support projects that advance the field of conservation finance. As in our Environmental Markets work, we may seek to maximize support for the desired outcomes by (a) funding multiple organizations that are dedicated to those outcomes, (b) securing additional funders who will donate alongside or through us, and (c) contributing some of our own staff time as appropriate. The approach employed in most of the conservation-finance projects we have supported, which we term “project finance for permanence,” is reviewed in a detailed report, related case studies, and journal article.

Institutions
Under this program the Trust will provide financial support to a small number of very high-quality institutions whose missions are directly supportive of our own. The support will be unrestricted, or will substitute for unrestricted funds by meeting very high-priority requirements of the institutions.
